Electron microscopy image of cardiac mitochondria. Loss of Mfn-1 and Mfn-2 induces the creation of finger-like projections and invaginations during the establishment of mitochondrial boundaries. Papanicolaou et al demonstrate that mitofusins are essential for proper mitochondrial remodeling in the postnatal heart as it transitions from placental to pulmonary circulation.
